Why We Oppose Animal Studies

We're opposed to animal testing for many reasons: it's useless it's cruel, it's used to knowingly dupe the public and help market dangerous, unnecessary pharmaceuticals. For an excellent review of why animal testing needs to be stopped entirely, we recommend this video, entitled "The Shocking Truth: Drug Companies Do Animal Experiments Because They're Useless," featuring Vernon Coleman MD. Watch now (9 minutes):

How did Chef AJ lose all that weight? She gave up nuts.

Editor's Note: We ran into our friend, Chef AJ, at a local vegan fair not long ago and were struck -- she's lost a lot of weight!  She then told a story of being in excellent health, but being questioned about her own weight when she is teaching healthy weightloss, and how working with a top plant-based clinic in Northern California led her to change her diet, and get some amazing results.  We asked if she would share her story, and she said she is finishing a new book, and has a full chapter telling what she did.  With [...]

Can’t lose the weight? It could be the nuts

We recently ran an article by Chef AJ talking about how she dropped the extra weight she had been trying to lose for years.  AJ had been eating a healthy plant-based diet – that included regular rich desserts and chocolate.  She says she was also eating 1.5 ounces of nuts a day.  AJ said she gave up all desserts and chocolate for one year, but lost no weight.  Then she gave up the nuts, and her excess weight rather effortlessly disappeared in a matter of months. Some were surprised by AJ's success because there are studies suggesting moderate nut intake doesn't [...]

AJ Loses MORE Weight — on Veggies & Starch (VIDEO)

Editor's Note:  Chef AJ has previously written on VegSource.com about her journey to optimal weight and health. She tried various approaches over many years as a vegan, and finally succeeded by simply focusing on low calorie-dense vegetables and high-satisfaction starches -- a proven combo for longterm health and permanent weight loss, while eating all you want. Since her last article on the subject, AJ has lost another 14 pounds!  I asked her about it, and am sharing her email response here, with her permission: - - - - - Hi Jeff, How are you?  I am so excited to tell you [...]

How the ethical argument fails veganism

Okay, please excuse the incendiary title of this article.  Someone recently sent me links to a couple of articles from vegan websites with titles like "How the Health Argument Fails Veganism." These articles come from animal activists like Ginny Messina and Matt Ball at Vegan Outreach, and go something like this:  It's hard enough to go vegan because you have to restrict foods you eat, if you follow a program like Dr. McDougall or the Engine 2 Diet, you have to give up even more foods, the programs don't really work like they claim, and it's just too much [...]

Resolving Corruption — How to “Reboot” Your Brain so that Healthy Eating is Preferred

Adopting a health-promoting diet in the modern world is among the most difficult challenges facing humans living in industrialized societies. In the world of our ancient ancestors, the biological imperative of life was getting enough to eat while avoiding being eaten. Most early humans were unsuccessful and did not live long enough to reproduce. The few that survived (our ancestors) lived exclusively on whole, natural foods. They never ate refined carbohydrates or processed oils because these artificially concentrated food-like substances did not exist. Drugs like alcohol and cocaine create intense pleasure feelings by fooling the brain into producing increased quantities [...]

Don’t go vegetarian or vegan for health benefits

Do you like questionable studies on vegetarians? If so, it's your lucky day!  In a new analysis from Seventh Day Adventist researchers, results were published of a 6 year diet study that followed 70,000 people.  And the big news, according to the study, is that male vegetarians have a 12% lower chance of dying than meat-eaters. Wow!  Impressive! There's just one problem: to get that claim, the Adventist researchers had to call people "vegetarian" who actually eat fish ("fish-eaters") or who actually eat meat from time to time ("semi-vegetarians"). When you take the fish-eaters and meat-eaters out of the study's [...]

How to Win An Argument With a Meat-Eater

How Strictly Must You Follow A Healthy Diet?

"Just a Little" Can Kill You? How strictly do you need to follow the recommendations of Dr. McDougall or Dr. Esselstyn to get protection from heart disease? Well, when my father was in his early 80s, he had chest pains due to arterial blockages, and he had a couple stents put in. It scared him and he spoke on the phone with Dr. Esselstyn and Dr. McDougall, and decided to go onto a lowfat plant-based program. He ate pretty clean and managed to get his numbers down and to get off cholestrol-lowering and other heart medications they had put [...]

Lose the Nuts, Lose the Weight – Update from Chef AJ and Others

I recently had the pleasure of attending the annual Healthy Lifestyle Expo in Woodland Hills, California. As I was exiting the Ladies Room a woman came up to me and asked "did you really lose all that weight simply by abstaining from nuts"? I don't think a day has gone by since my story first appeared on this website in July of 2012 where I haven't gotten at least one e-mail asking me that question, and I am happy to answer it. In a nutshell (pun intended), yes, I did lose a whole lot of weight when I stopped [...]
