Meg I have Mallard Ducks and we live in North Cariolina. When it gets cold down here (which I don't think is as cold as New York) we just let them do whatever they want to and some how it always works out that they all live. Now it is like the nineth year we have raised Mallards and we have had no problems with the weather. So all I can say is just let them be free to travel where they need to go to stay alive. If you take good care of them you will have no problem with them not coming back home.
