Where you live it might be better to wait until spring to stop feeding the ducks. If you lived in Southern California you would stop feeding them right away since it is warm all year and there is plenty of vegetation and insects for them to eat. Did you see "Nature - animals behaving badly" on PBS? That same thing happened to a lady in the San Fernando Valley. Mallards started coming into her yard because she had a swimming pool with a floater shaped like a duck. She fed the ducks and she ended up with a huge swarm of Mallards so she stopped feeding them.
I found a mallard or two in my pool so I tried planting duckweed in my ornamental pool. I have to get up early in the morning if I don't want to miss them.
