I've kept beta fish for years. One of the things I do, is I bleach the bowl and fake plants and thouroughly rince the items before putting the fish bowl back together. I then use a tablet to do its thing to the water and wait 15 minutes or so before putting the beta back into the water. Once or twice a week, I turn the filter on for a few minutes to get oxygen into the water. My betas are different colours, colour never mattered as to how long they live. My betas have lived for up to four years.
