I used to have a rescued tarantula in a 10 gallon aquarium. It liked to eat crickets, grasshoppers, lots of insects. I didn't feed it mice, it didn't seem large enough anyway to eat mice, maybe it would have ate pinkies. I got it when my friends had been bit in their sleep and then it was in their house and they were either going to kill it or I had to take it, so I took it. Yes, reptile bark or rocks will do as substrate (aka bedding).
