Well i deffinently dont think its an illness and what your fish might want is a female! Because what your betta is doing is creating a bubble nest!
A bubble nest isnt dangerous to your fish or tank...
The bubble nest is what they create for babies and for when he is about ready to spawn!
Spawning is when a male and female mate but he raps her up in his fins and he gently sqeezes her and the eggs drop out! as the eggs drop out the male will follow them and he will put them in his mouth as he carries them into the bubble nest! The female should then be removed and placed into a seprate tank or jar/bowl until she heals because they tend to get aggressive and put her in warm water...not too hot or cold!!!
The male should then stay with them for the next for days after they hatch and then he must be removed or he will hurt or eat them!!
Also make sure you feed the babies a certain powder recremended by a pet shop for the babies...which are called fry... or you can get "small fry liquid food"!!! or once again ask a pet shop for some food!
Well if you have any more questions...i'll be glad to help!!!!
Have fun if you decide to spawn your fish if you decide to get a female!!
it is a beautiful thing to see!!!
