I'm not an expet, but I had a betta that lived 5 years. If your room is colder than 68, i would definately get a heater for him. As for feeding him every other day; that is bad advise. I feed my bettas twice a day, you should feed him at least once per day. Just a little bit of food (2-4 pieces of high protein floating fish food) bettas love live and frozen food too. Experts recomend that you should keep your betta in at least a one gallon container. P.S. make sure you don't put him in direct sunlight to warm him up, the temprature change will be too sudden for him.
