They are cold water fish, they are fine in water with ice covering it... their needs change some, but it is not unhealthy for them. It sounds like you should stick a thermometer in their water, anyway. If the lamp would be too hot at night, it is too hot during the day. I don't remember the upper temps they are comfortable in, but if your water is more than 70-somthing degrees F., you should look into it further.
