Hello there!
I need help with training and desensitizing my 3yr old border collie that i
adopted from a roommate back in April '13.She was a stray he found on his
door step that he decided to "keep".She was nervous and scared to be
touched and of people, just shaking and hiding in a corner curled up in a
ball.I moved in 2 months after she showed up.The roommate didn't allow
her inside ever and neglected her and hit her once for digging.I quickly took
over and adopted her but was only able to train her part time since she was
outdoor only.i recently moved to a new place after my ex roommate
sprayed weed killer which poisoned her causing perminant lung damage. As
far as i know she has never been inside before and she is terrified of the
loud traffic noise from the main road across the street and train that she
hates being outside and can't concentrate enough to go potty even. She is
frozen with fear when on a busy street (at the vets for exmple) and with
anything to do with being in or near a car (we have to drag her into the car
and she freezes and curls up, buries her head and shakes the whole
ride). She is afraid of loud noises inside the house as well as hallways. She
is very smart and catches on quick but is submissive and cowers with most
men and unknown people. She has never been socialized other then seeing
a stray dog here and there.I have done so much research on proper ways
to train anxious dogs and have tryed using a clicker. But as soon as she
gets nervous the concentratiom goes out the window and she either runs
away to hid or starts a nervous habit of digging at the floor or burring her
head and doesn't listen.I want her to have more self confidence and be less
submissive, as well as less nervous with loud traffic and noises so she will
actually potty (she's given herself a bladder infection from holding it).She is
my first dog ever (none even as a kid) so I am in the dark on how to
achieve this.I am from CA but live in Ireland where their views on animals
especially working dogs is outdated and just plain wrong sometimes. My ex
roommate was a farmer which is why he thought animals all belong outside
all the time with little training and no real companionship.i am frustrated
with the lack of resources here on how to be the best dog parent i can be
and struggling to keep her calm and relaxed most days. She has lots of
other issues (ex:walking without pulling, and barking when put in her run
outside, chewing and eating her bedding ect.) but really the scared
nervousness and building her confidence is what i think she needs.
I am asking Callie for help because I read how she has dealt with abused
dogs before and also her advice to others seemed amazing! Other advice
is also welcome of course! Thank you! There's much more I'd like to write
but it would be just too long...
