I used DE on my carpets and under my couch cushions where the dog often sits. My only issue was that the DE, which is the consistency of talc powder, clogged up my vacuum in a jiffy and I almost broke the darn thing. Otherwise it worked well. The details Callie has given are noteworthy. Food grade is safe to use if you have kids and be sure to wear a mask and goggles because you will inhale it and it will plume up in your face. I, the hard headed genius that I am, said pfffft, that's crap. I don't need protection.... then I had to take my contacts out because my eyes were so dry, and I developed a decent cough lasting about three days. Like I said-genius. In addition to DE, I also diluted eucalyptus oil and spritzed it on my dog's hind end (where fleas liked to gather) and a little around the house and not only does my house smell fresh, the fleas are gone. For the spring, I've purchased Ortho Bug B Gone to treat my yard so they are less likely to come back. I know you posted this like two years ago but I searched like crazy to find out what safe options I had to get rid of fleas, and it sucked. So I wanted to add my two cents for anyone else still looking for answers. :) PS: I'm in Georgia, I simply loathe bugs in my house, I have one mostly indoor dog who sleeps all over, I have three young stepchildren who love playing on the floor, and I'm on a super tight budget. So there IS hope! Just make sure you wear a mask and have a strong vacuum whose filters you empty frequently and thoroughly!
