1-2 mg pound body weight given 2-3 times a day -- so two twice a day is a minimal dose and fine for them.

Seriously -- before they put him on seizure meds PLEASE PLEASE try TCVM. Traditional Chinese Veterinary medicine -- it is BY FAR the best way to go. Particularly with a liver shunt. is the Chi Institute -- and on the left is a locator. UNDER that is a sentence link for vets in Canada and other parts of the world.

Kee Shu had seizures and it was awesome for her. Phenobarbitol and potassium bromide and ANY of the big seizure drugs have horrible side effects.

If the liver values are high THAT will cause seizures and seriously TCVM excells in helping dogs like this. A really good friend of mine has a dog with liver issues like this and at this point Pi's not having to have big seizure meds at all.

He started out on pheno and wound up with pancytopenia -- that's an auto-immune disease CAUSED by phenobarbitol -- she almost lost him and all the vets do is add more seizure meds.

But by bringing the liver into balance you reduce the seizures AND they feel better.

There are herbs that can help reduce the liver values (milk thistle to start -- buy it in bulk and it's WAY cheaper and then SAM-e if you need more help detoxing the liver.

We honestly should talk -- I'm not at home currently (we've gone up to NY state to visit my folks for a few days).

Seriously -- acupuncture is THE way to go with this -- even at the University of Florida vet school they teach to use the herbs and acupuncture FIRST and only resort to drugs if you can't get it under control with herbs simply because the side effects are SO serious and life-threatening.
