It's essentially a dessicant. Be SURE to get food grade (but honestly don't *feed* it to your dog -- it can cause some upset tummy/digestive tract).
But spreading it around your yard or even in the house -- it kills simply by drying out the pests to the point where they die. You DO have to replenish after rain (it washes away).
I know Ellie has used it extensively and i've used it here in Florida.
You CAN actually put it ON the dog's coat -- again it's not a fast kill. It simply sucks the moisture out of the flea.
Depending on where you live you may be able to get away with only that or it's a good complimentary measure to whatever else you're doing.
