Sorry -- I missed this before --
How often is he used to going out? I mean he was at work with you and how often did you take him out?? Has he ever routinely held it all day?
My other caution would be to make certain he doesn't have a UTI -- has he begun to drink more??
Holding it at night is different -- your schedule is different and he likely hasn't had hours to empty his body in the morning the way he does at night.
Did you simply put him in the crate and x-pen and begin leaving him all day? Generally it takes a WHILE to train them TO the crate - for them to see this as a place TO hold it ... not just a place he happens to be when he can't hold it.
This truly has all the earmarks of a dog who has never atually been fully house-trained. If you have been letting him out at regular intervals during the day then he's likely not learned that he must hold it.
You're likely going to need to go back to house-training 101 and perhaps have someone come in to let him out -- gradually getting him to hold it longer day after day.
