A male can smell a female in heat up to FIVE miles away. Their sense of smell is SO keen -- really they can smell things we don't even understand WHAT they know from it.

Dogs have an organ called the "Jacobsen's Organ" -- it is between their nose and the roof of their mouth. It is literally hundreds of feet of a super thin membrane that is folded up (think of how the inside of a car's air filter looks if you've ever seen one) all stuffed inside that small space. But all that surface area "collects" scent.

A snake has a Jacobsen's organ in their tongue -- that's how a snake can stick out its tongue and 'taste" the air.

We have virtually NOTHING for a nose compared to what a dog has. When you see your dog lift it's head and sniff the air -- it's using it's Jacobsen's organ.

When a dog sniffs another dog -- it's not just curiousity -- that dog then knows everything -- from what the other dog had to eat last night to how it feels emotionally. Often they can tell when the other dog is sick even!!

When dogs go up and down the street to sniff where other dogs have potty'd it's ... for them ... like reading the newspaper. They know if the other dog is happy, sad, sick, well, scared, etc.

WE humans just don't have the same organ of smell -- so we really can't even begin to understand ALL they know when they sniff each other.

But yes -- they need to also respect each other ... and that's where WE come in. By telling your dog to "sit" -- or simply telling the other person "I need to walk away -- my dog isn't happy with this".

We humans get nervous -- because we're a bit afraid what other people might think. But honestly? We need to do what is best for our DOG in that situation. And if you have to move away -- do it and don't feel bad!!
