I love old dogs THE BEST. I've had old dogs who were mine from puppyhood, I've had old dogs who came to us late as rescues (or life's throw-aways).
I love them all. As mentioned in this article I love their grace -- but I also love their wisdom. I love the way they learn to communicate -- sometimes gettng extremely creative in how they get US to know what they need.
When Foxy the MOstlie Sheltie reached 18, there was arthritis, there was sciatica -- and sometimes he LIVED for being massaged where he hurt.
He would come up to my desk and LOOK AT the bottle of essential oils I kept there. (I have arthritis myself.) He would come up and STAND ... just looking at the bottle ... if I didn't get it quickly, he would ... SIGH.
Sometimes I would have two different kinds -- and often he would CHOOSE. If I picked up the wrong one -- he would POINTEDLY STARE at the other one ... with an even **BIGGER** sigh. "That one .. PLEASE?"
And from HIM I learned -- there *was* a difference. They were both good for arthritis -- but if the ache was mostly muscles (from over-compensating) then the WoodLock oil was actually BETTER. But if it was bone pain? Nope -- the White Flower Oil was better.
HE knew.
I love all dogs -- but I so love an old dog. And an old rescue can be beyond price. They are grateful for a good loving home in their last days. And sometimes -- like the little old lady peke we have right now -- she's gotten a chance to have a safe life that she's never had. To learn to trust and actually ENJOY the comfort of a human's arms.
I hope when I get that age that someone will be patient with me when I forget which way I'm going ... or when I'm incontinent. But until then I'll content myself with loving old dogs. They are a delight.
