April Frost's "Beyond Obedience".
Dr. Dodson's "The Dog Who Loved Too Much".

These will give you some basic background on dog commnication, fear, dominance, pack order, basics of how dogs think and feel, as well as a little bit on dealing with fear, trauma and trust issues.
