When was the last time you had the two of them -- particularly Ernie -- for a complete senior physical (complete with some bloodwork)?? My first thot is that Bert thinks Ernie is sick -- and he could be smelling something internally.

The other thing is it could be arthritis -- is Ernie crying at all?? That could be Bert trying to soothe Ernie.
