I think you are confusing him. He is still very young. He should stay in his crate until 100% potty trained unless of course you are with him and able to watch him at all times. If you cannot catch him in the act all of your efforts of potty training is not going to help. They tend not to go in the crate. Unfortunately wether it is cold out or not he needs to go outside. You can get a sweater to put on him for outside. I personally do not like newspaper training as you are adding just one more step to potty training. For right now you need to keep him on a very regiment schedule. If he does not potty when you take him out put him back in the crate and try again in 20 minutes. When he does go praise him. It can take months to train the little guy but I think the most important thing is schedule and not to much freedom. I own 5 dogs plus just got a new one and all were crate trained.
