Glad to see you post -- had missed you!! Yes, crate rest on an active dog is VERY hard. You may honestly want to give him a bit of help with even something like Calms Forte or Oat Seed (Herb Pharm - a tincture) to help him relax and take it a big easier. Even Benedryl "for the duration" won't hurt and it can take the edge off. Having him re-injure it in his bursts to get OUT can surely happen and that sets you back to more crate rest.
