Subject:         Chocolate Lab Water Fixation Problem
Date: July 19, 2008 at 11:32 am PST

We have a beautiful Chocolate Lab puppy named Marley. He is now 13 months old. He "loves" the water, "loves" to swim etc....I know swimming is in the breed. But this is the problem. When he is near any water, all of a sudden he can't hear and his only goal is to get in the water. He just goes in and starts swimming away from us. He heads straight across the lake or whatever. We have had to go in to get him from a boat. He won't come back to us, or even swim to the shore. We do not want to contribute to this problem of fixation, but we want to be able to take him to the lake for swims. So now we take him to the lake, and put a long leash rope on him, (25 ft) and let his swim that way. But this is not ideal. Will he grow out of this? Or what can we do to train him to come when called. I have tried treats, nothing interests him more than the water. any suggestions? Or does anyone know of where we can get help? He has been in dog obedience classes. He will come, sit and stay when no water around. Please Help
