They took him off the IV this morning as he is eating everything in sight. He still looks very scraggly indeed but is chipper and active. He's peeing and pooping enough to reassure the vet that kidneys and digestive system are working. He is very curious about everything and is busy getting all the petting and attention he can. The vet says he's about 6-7 weeks old, just an infant. The good part of that is that, although he really would not have lasted more than another day or so out there, the starvation was fairly brief. As horrible as it was, it may do less damage to his growth and development than a longer period of malnutrition. He may bounce back fairly well, because he is at a stage of incredibly rapid growth. But, we won't really know for months yet how much damage has been done, especially to his heart and bones. As much as the temptation is to let him just eat and eat and eat, I can't do that; we have to pace his growth so that he doesn't overload his organs. Luckily, he's as hungry for love as for food, and of that I can give him plenty. I'll pick him up on my way home. When I visited this morning, he seemed to recognize me and tried to come after me when I left, which amazed me. He's a sweet little guy. Dr. Kennedy just shakes his head; he's getting used to my bringing him one utterly desperate case after another that miraculously pulls through.
