Subject:         good thoughts needed for Pippin, please! (kleenex alert)

Some of you who've been here awhile might remember my posting about a police deputy pulling me over on the freeway, lights, sirens and all, to give me a tiny kitten rescued from an impounded car during an arrest. The kitten is now a huge grey cat who sits sentinel in my front window, and I hadn't seen Lt. Kiser in quite some time. Yesterday morning, he turned up at my front door. Now, around here, when people see the law at your door at 6:30 on a Sunday morning, well, that'll give the church ladies something to talk about. He began, "I called animal control a few days ago" (here I get a little faint) "but they can't get over this way till maybe Tuesday, and there are two little bitty puppies that someone set out on Bryant Road, and I can't catch 'em. But they'll probably go to you, will you try?" I was already gathering up slip leashes and cans of Mighty Dog...
well, I found the little white one; he'd made a little den under some bushes. He was nothing but bones, and very scared. after scarfing the food, he looked at me with a half-hearted attempt at a growl, then gave up, sat back and let me pick him up. He's at the vet, on IV fluids, eating and drinking but still very weak. The vet says he is in serious starvation, and has about a 50-50 chance of survival. Please think good thoughts for little Pippin. He is trying so hard to live.
and about now you're thinking, but weren't there two pups? there were indeed. I went back and searched high and low for the other one - and finally in the high grass, only a couple feet from the den, I found the little skeleton. He'd been too weak even to drag himself into the den, and died there under the pitiless summer sun.
The ones who did this, who set out those helpless little beings....oh, there's a place for such people.
but what of the four or five cars who stopped, while I was coaxing Pippin out, and said, "yeah, those puppies have been out there for a week, terrible thing..."
could none of those folks have stopped and helped these babies, days ago? didn't take much. a 40-cent can of food and ten minutes' coaxing, that's all it took. And days ago, before the pups were in such bad shape, a rescue would have taken them. I try not to think that way, and just say, well, at least they realize this stuff shouldn't happen. but man, it's hard not to think somewhat uncharitable thoughts.
I really believe little Pippin has a future ahead of him. There's so much spunk in him. and i think bigger hands than mine are on the wheel here.
