I always have to be "on guard" - my pups come to "earnin biscuits" with me and do pet therapy at my workplace. Since we have residents with aggressive behaviors, and residents with unpredictable behaviors, and residents who make odd sounds and movements, and residents who have hallucinations, it's a challenging place for the dogs and I am careful about monitoring the dogs and being a bit selective about who they visit when. But man, just when you THINK you know exactly what you're dealing with....surprise! Luckily, if the day isn't going right, my dogs can chill in my office with a toy and not be disturbed. But several times, I've had to deal with "pressure" from activity directors: "oh c'mon, we want to get some MORE residents to see the dog, Johnny's been hitting today but he'll be okay here..." NO! I have to protect both people and my dogs, and the so-far pristine reputation of pet therapy here. Sometimes that means setting limits. Oh well.
