No, I use a lot of things for dog allergies. If you use Benedryl you have to use *enough* and you have to use it faithfully.
The proper dose is 1-2 mg/lb body weight given two to four times a day. That sounds like a lot but it's because dog metabolisms are so very different from ours (check that with your vet or any vet PDR at the library - it IS right)
That means a 25 pound dog needs a full capsule as a *minimal* dose. Twice a day is BARE minimum. Yes, it makes them sleepy at first but they do get used to it.
I also use homeopathics a lot -- they have no side effects and are very safe. I use Hylands "Hives" formula (because dog allergies are SO 'skin' oriented) and I also give Heel's "Allergy" formula (I do use both with no problems). YOu have to give those four times a day tho but they do help enormously.
Another thing I find VERY helpful is the homeopathic "Hypericum" (which is St. John's Wort in Homeopathic strength). I use Hylands individuals of that and give him 4-6 pellets when he seems particularly bothered by itch.
The 'itch' is actually caused by the histamines rising to the top of their skin -- it gives them a prickly feeling similar to what you or I get if we've set on our foot too long and it's gone 'asleep'. Sometimes just gently massaging the area will help.
