The two kids, two dogs and I were on our own all day today, until my brother in law came home in the later evening.
I tried to get things away from him three times today, twice before I read the advice and once after. The first two I got the things away, but more by accident than anything I think.
The third time was after I read the responses here and I tried the alpha dog thing. He did not want to give in. I gave it all the alpha I could project and tried to keep increasing tensness, lowering voice, ect. And he gave!!! It was not an accident or anything, he gave way!!!
I've also been continuing working with him with nothing in life is free type of things. He is starting to obey more easily. I don't know if he had such a hard time obeying before because I don't do voice commands very well (I am much more consistant with hand signals) or because he didn't think he had to obey me or both... probably both.
I got a chance to talk with my brother in law about dogs. He said he doesn't really know that much about them. He understands his advantage in voice and posture but said he didn't do anything on purpose, it is just how he is. He thinks Molson (his dog when I met him, who died shortly after they got Charlie) was soooo good because Molson spent his first couple of years with an outstanding dog and learned from him.
I'm going to try to explain Charlie to my mother in law, if I get a chance. She will be back tomorrow and probably for the rest of the days I'll be here, because my sister in law comes home tomorrow and will need the help. I am apprehensive about what Charlie will be like when they get here. It helps that my brother in law wants me to be in charge of Charlie, and said to do whatever I think best about him, I feel freer to take charge of him with that direction. I'm hoping if I can get far enough with him, my mother in law will see the difference and be willing to at least listen to me about him.
