I'd simply play "mama alpha" to the hilt. If he took something away, I'd stand up full height, FISTS on hips, body completely tense and ramrod straight and I'd say 'EXCUSE ME? DROP it!' (or 'leave it' or whatever).
He's going to sense *your* fear so you simply have to adopt an unruffled alpha persona, be stiff and unyielding and TELL him he's gonna drop it.
He responds to men because he knows he can't cow them. Women are wusses -- the sil does it wrong most of the time and the mil ... she's making it hard on everyone (and makes it all into a game! FUN to yank her chain).
Keep your voice ultra low -- almost a growl. It's one of the things he responds to in men (esp. since your brother is quite silent) - so he's looking for an in-control body stance. Essentially say "don't mess with me" just in your bearing.
