Syrian hamsters don't like friends, they are solitary. Simple: keep them single and stop hamster overpopulation. Since hamsters are prey animals, they clean up the site after birth, eating bloody shavings and anything that would give a trace of babies. So if the cage is too small, the mom gets obsessed with cleaning and cleans up (eats) the babies as well.
