Dear Cortney -- your vet should have a listing of dog psychologists. Start with "The Dog Who Loved Too Much" by Dr. Nicholas Dodman. This is the Amazon.com entry:
The Dog Who Loved Too Much: Tales, Treatments, and the Psychology of Dogs
by Nicholas H. Dodman (Paperback - April 1997)

There is a whole chapter in there on exactly the type of behavior you describe. A border collie is a herding dog. In the beginning, circling is a pattern of herding, but sometimes that gets 'lost' as the obsession grows.

This could actually be a type of seizure -- particularly since you describe it as a 'trance'. Tons of things can cause this, or it can be genetic. But there are drugs even that can help this. If it's discovered that it is a seizure, then you have to weigh the pros and cons of drug therapy, but most of the people I know who have seizure dogs feel it is worth it to buy some peace for the dog.
