In our ceiling fan on our patio the mourning doves built a nest. The adult birds were very good parents one was there constantly. There was only one hatchling. We have seen the parents feeding the hatchling and he seems to be alert and ok. All of a sudden within the last day, they stopped coming to the nest. The parents will come to the fence and sit and watch the baby, but they do not come to the nest, as far as we know. The hatchling is there all night and all day alone for at least 1 day now. Does anyone know if this is usual behavior? or should we think about calling some kind of a rescue organization. We have not done anything to disturb the bird or the nest. We are having extreme heat here, and I don't think that little bird can last very long without food or water.
