Subject:         Advice Needed-Parakeet Foot
Date: September 18, 2007 at 9:40 pm PST

One of my parakeets seems to have a hurt foot. It doesn't appear to have any blood on it, and looks as it normally does. However, she appears to try to keep her weight off of that foot by propping her leg onto whatever she's sitting on at the time in her cage-she rests on that leg lightly and lets her foot just kind of dangle away from touching anything. She has been doing this for the past few days-my husband and I have been watching her to see if she's ok/if anything is seriously wrong. It seems as though she can't, or won't, close the claws of her foot-maybe it hurts too bad. I've seen her climbing on the side of the cage a bit, but I think she tries not to do that-I can tell it bothers her, and she tries not to let her foot touch the bars too long (still seems like she won't close the claws of her foot). My husband and I have hand fed her a few times so she wouldn't have to move across the cage to get to the food, so she could rest her foot and let it get better quicker-but we don't know what happened, we don't know what's wrong. I feel really bad for her and don't like knowing she's hurt. Should I separate her from my other parakeets (I have 5 others, and they're all in a large cage), and put her in a small cage with her food and water arranged so she doesn't have to move much and so the other birds won't agitate her foot with their being playful or wanting her to move? What can I do to help her get better-anything before having to find a vet, or is this a common occurrence with parakeets and it may just take time to heal itself? I'm kind of afraid to have to grab her to move her to a cage on her own for awhile or if I have to take her to a vet somewhere-even though she's a wonderful little bird, she's just been eating out of my hand and allowing me to slightly pet her a little bit over the past couple months, and I've had her for a year or a little longer...I'd hate to break the trust that's been kind of hard to form with her, plus I don't want to accidentally hurt her more. Any suggestions or information anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated. Sorry so long, but thanks for any help-I want my little bird to get well soon!!
