| | Subject: | Need Help With Baby Mourning Dove! | |
Date: | July 28, 2007 at 12:57 pm PST |
I had always told people I don't raise baby mourning doves because they can be difficult. But when my neighbors brought me this pitiful little three day old mourning dove they had found next to its dead sibling in a downed nest, I couldn't refuse. I decided to give it another try. And it was a success. Two weeks old, Ryoko is now at the age where I would be setting the babies free. She has a friend, a same aged Cassin's Finch, who has been living outside, but when I bring her out she doesn't want to go like Nikko does. So this is my question; is the release of a MD different than that of a regular bird? I don't mind if it's more difficult because I want her to have every chance a wild bird does. She's moved into the adult cage with my parakeet and Luca (my domestic robin), and she perches. She also picks at the seed bowl and at little pieces of lint on my bed. She never really goes far from my side, stretching her wings by beating them and zooming a centimeter from the blanket on my bed (cute :) ). She flies to my shoulder and seems to have no interest in the outside. So... any ideas? Anything is appreciated. Thank you! -Mira
