We in Malaysia are 100% behind you. You have to have
been in Britain during the height of the BSE crisis to know
how helpless you feel in the face of governmental and industry
assurances. I was there as a student and it made a huge impression
on me about the fragililty of the food system that we're creating.
The lesson for everyone is clear: when the question of food
safety is no longer in our control, then it is those whose motives
are primarily profits who sets the standards and who regulate
what is deemed acceptable and what is not. Keep up the good
work!!!!!
Malaysia
Thank you for spreading the word about the conditions of meat
in this country, and for standing up to those that would prefer
to decide for the rest of us what information should be put
out there. Am completely in support of your efforts, and can't
thank you enough for 'representing' the rest of us who would
speak truth to power if we had the courage and the opportunity.
Missouri
How obsurd that a country which attempts to portray itself
to the rest of the world as the "land of the free"
and all that crap, actually allows people to be taken to court
for expressing their own opinons!!
What next - perhaps the state of Texas should take a leaf out
of China's book and start "disappearances" and intimidation
of anti-meat, pro-animal rights activists, and vegetarians,
just in case they "damage the industry" by promoting
information about vegetarianism or worse still (horrors); educate
people about what happens to that slab on the table before it
gets to their plate, and after....
New Zealand
Thanks for your bravery in taking the meat industry. May it
be rewarded. Best of luck to you and Oprah in this case.
While I don't call myself vegetarian, I can't look at a package
of chicken breasts or fish filets the same way I used to. I
don't remember when was the last time I ate chicken. Seafood
doesn't seem quite appealing now. Next time I go to that place
with the "wonderful" seafood enchilada, I will order
the vegetarian burrito.
I am furious about this lawsuit. The right to speak the truth
and express our personal opinions, no matter how "un-pretty"
must always be defended. Don't let them silence you.
Everett, Washington
Mr. Lyman & Ms. Winfrey - While I am so sorry that you
are having to endure this sorry excuse for a trial, I am very
happy that this issue has been brought to the public's attention
in such a prominent fashion. I have spoken to many people about
your case (vegetarians and meat-eaters) and everyone has agreed
that this is a total sham. I believe that what you are doing
is going to give the vegetarian movement a huge boost in public
awareness, and for that I am eternally grateful to you. I have,
for a long time, had a great deal of respect for both of you,
each for your respective contributions to the betterment of
humankind. I am behind you 100% on this issue!
Alabama
Thank you facing the cattlemen head on! Your first-hand experience
and honest and caring demeanor will, I am sure, convince the
jury of your sincerity and expertise.
Suggest that the press read "Deadly Feast" which chronicles
the history of Mad Cow Disease. Extensive research clearly demonstrated
that the agents which cause mad cow and CJD are unaffected by
the "sterilizing" methods which the cattlemen claim
are utulized before the cattle are fed to other cattle. The
cattlemen are playing profitable roulette with the lives of
other people. Thank you Howard and Oprah.
Gualala, CA
I am following the Amarillo lawsuit via the Internet. Some
of the Prosecution Witnesses' statements should be strongly
challenged in court.
1. Bill O'Brien said the: " ... (Oprah) show was scary.".
CHALLENGE: The potential horror of BSE/CJD in America is "scary";
what is wrong with scary?
2. Mike Engler admitted that more than ten cattle suffering
from neurological disorders had gone to the rendering plant
BUT ... the symptoms were not those of BSE.
CHALLENGE: If there is no BSE in America, how does Engler (or
his veterinarians) know what cattle with BSE look and behave
like?
3. Mike Engler demonstrated that, in a 20 lb feed mix, the maximum
amount of rendered cattle tissue (healthy or otherwise) would
be a little over 1 lb. It has been shown that 1 gram of infective
material can infect a healthy animal if eaten. So 1 lb of spinal
cord/nerve ganglia/spleen could provide 400 infective doses.
CHALLENGE: Does Engler imagine (only) 1lb of infective material
in a 20 lb mix would be safe ?
4. Bill O'Brien claimed that publications such as "Newsweek"
had informed its readers that the cattle tissue fed to other
cattle had been "rendered"; O'Brien reckoned this
made such articles acceptable. According to him, Oprah's show
did not make this clear and so was defamatory.
CHALLENGE: The Fore people of New Guinea "rendered"
their dead relatives brain and other tissues by cooking them
in heated water with salt and spices; they then ate the soup.
Consequently and subsequently many of the diners developed the
dreadful BSE-like disease Kuru. The Fore are
described in all the textsbooks on spongiform encephalopathies
as "cannibals". SO ... I do not see how cooking cattle
tissue prior to its consumption by other cattle makes the practice
less "cannabalistic".
O'Brien should be rearing Ostriches, not cattle; the former
are well-known for burying their heads in the sand when exposed
to danger.
Scotland
I just wanted to write and thank you for everything you have
done in defense of the millions of people and animals that have
not been able to defend themselves. Last year you visited my
University with your message of health and kindness, and you
helped me to realize the benefits of a vegetarian diet. Since
then I have been 100% vegetarian, and I have never felt better.
You are truly the vanguard force in this battle -- I commend
you. Even though this trial is an attempted infringement of
the first amendment, it will give you the chance to reach a
much larger audience. They can never silence you. Your message
is alive and spreading through the people that hear you, and
spread the news. Keep up the good work!
Montana.
I would just like to thank you and Oprah for standing up for
your (and our) freedom of speech! I think it's a terrible miscarrage
of justice that this farce has gone on as long as it has!
Just know that there are millions of people who support you,
Oprah and your right to stand up for what you believe in!
LaPorte County, Indiana
I want you to know that my thoughts and prayers are with you
and Oprah at this time. I find it sad that America has allowed
its freedoms to become trampled by big business, whose main
concern is the bottom line. It is my hope that the end result
of this trial will be a triumphant affirmation of our right
to free speech.
Wyoming
Oprah, it makes me sick to my stomach to have to watsh and
listen to those individuals in the cattle raising industry trying
to destroy the image of a beautiful person like yourself, someone
who helps millions of people around the world everyday. I faithfully
watch your show on TV because you give me the encouragement
to be proud of myself when I felt like giving up. Oprah, these
farmers do have a beef and its not with you its with the beef.
Thank you for sharing your life and bring me happy tears over
the last ten years, your the best from somewho eles cares in
this world, your supporter who like to me you someday.
Nova Scotia, Canada
this is ridiculous...but oh well...welcome to texas...i won't
ever eat texas beef...and if a restaurant serves it i will leave...furthermore...if
and when we visit family or friends..we won't eat beef there...well
that's enough venting...take care
Ohio
We wish you and Oprah the best of luck in your "fight"
against the beef industry. Some people are just afraid of the
truth . . . incomewise. I wonder if George Bush would have been
sued by the broccoli growers if they had had as strong as lobby
as that of the beef industry.
Albany, New York
Just wanted to say thank you for what you are going through.
I know that you are fighting for freedom of speech, but you
are also fighting for the rights of all us vegetarians. We have
to deal with this prejudice every day. Don't give up. There
are millions of us behind you.
Oprah: I didn't think it was possible to have a higher opinion
of you but I was wrong. You have moved up another notch.
Howard: Thank you for putting the "humane" in Humane
Society. I have always thought people working for the Humane
Society should be vegetarian.
Life is a series of enlightenments and you both have made great
strides recently. Thank you.
Kansas
You are making such a difference in bringing the issues of
human health and cruelty to animals to light. In this day and
age where the media is largly controlled by people with vested
interests, it is sometimes difficult to get enough information
to be able to make informed choices. With a powerful meat lobby
against you it can't be easy educating people. I consider your
work nothing less than heroic. Good luck with the case!
London
Oprah is where she is because of her strength and ability to
meet challenges. She knows that there are certain people who
are going to be aggressively defensive regardless of the substance
of their position or worth of their cause
Regardless of the outcome, Oprah far outshines any one of the
cattlemen who turned a comment into this situation. Fortunately,
the American public doesn't hesitate one moment to support Oprah
in her efforts
Hawaii
I want to say that Oprah should be able to express her feelings
about any subject she chooses to on her show. She has "freedom
of speech" like the rest of us have. I think the cattle
people just saw an opportunity to try to get some of HER money.
They would have continued to lose money, because people just
aren't eating beef these days, at least those of us who are
concerned about our health. They seized an opportunity to make
money off Oprah since beef sales were going down by the day
and Oprah is in court as a result.
I wish Oprah the best. BTW, Oprah is on the top of my daily
prayer list.
Fort Worth, TX
Thank you for taking a stand for what you believe and what
may affect the lives of every consumer of beef in the United
States. You have stated what you believe and that is still valid
in a free country. These cattlemen are scared that you tell
the truth and don't want to play fair. You have seen the other
side of the industry and I thank you for challenging it.
Oprah, I thank you for inviting Howard to your show and congratulations
on giving up beef!
Albany, New York
There are many good reasons not to eat beef, in addition to
the potential threat of mad cow disease. The negative health
impacts resulting from a diet high in animal fat are well documented.
In addition, tremendous amounts of resources, in the form of
grains, water and land are allocated to beef production, which
is a very inefficient form of protein production. The modern
beef industry is based around the sad and cruel, barbaric treatment
of animals. Western lands ranching has resulted in devastating
environmental damage including soil compaction, stream bank
erosion, the destruction of native plant communities (not to
mention the destruction of tropical forests), and a relentless
war against native wildlife, such as wolves, bison and coyotes.
Public lands grazing in the West has become another tax payer
subsidized corporate welfare program, with folks such as TV
newsman Sam Donaldson reportedly getting in on the action. Cattle
ranchers have a long history of bullying and intimidating anyone
that dares to speak out against them, as can be attested to
by scientist Denzel Fergusen, author of "Sacred Cows at
the Public Trough".
Yours is just another, in their endless campaign to silence
the truth. Sorry Mr. Cattleman, but there are just some things
more important than profits. I feel that the more people become
informed about these issues, the less they will want to eat
meat, which will result in a healthier, more compassionate society.
Thank you for bringing this particular issue to the public's
attention. We are behind you all the way!
Eugene, Oregon
First of all..let me say..I am so embarrassmed by this group
of Cattlemen. Normally, I am proud of being a Texan, but times
like this make me feel ashamed.
I worked for a group of Cattlemen for 10 years and I know just
how they operate. To begin with, they are almost all chauvinists.
They would like nothing better than all women to be back in
the kitchen turning out those biscuits and gravy.
These Cattleman Association groups get their income from cattlemen
and related institutions based upon their sales. If the sales
are down then the dues are in turn down. One of those cattlemen's
wives was probably watching the Oprah Show and mentioned seeing
about the "madcow" thing and it started this entire
ordeal into motion. They found a way to possibly regain those
lost dues.
The sales dropped simply because that is all we saw on the television
and read in the newspaper and magazines for a month. Everyone
was a little scared. Are they going to sue Dan Rather, Tom Brokaw
and Peter Jennings and all of the networks and stations after
they are through with Oprah?
I am so sick of this. I may never buy another steak again. I
do wish we could have a boycott on beef just to show these cowboys
from another century.
Texas
More important even than the issue of the dangers of eating
meat is the issue of free speech. I'm glad to see you are standing
up for your 1st amendment rights! Let's get this country
back on track with the principles it was founded on. Thanks,
and Good Luck!!
Harvard University
I would like to thank you for having a show surrounding the
issue of food safety. I did not see the episode, but wish that
I did. Food safety is a long-standing issue in this country,
for both food providers and consumers. We have come a long way
over our short history as a country, and we have helped to set
safety standards in other countries. This is something to be
proud of.
It is in EVERYONE's best interest to remain up-to-date on what
potential problems exist and what could be done to find solutions.
I find the ignorance and greed of these people incomprehensible
and inexcusable. Please know that you have my support
and that of many other like-thinking individuals. When it comes
to public health, we can't afford to be fixated on the bottom
line.
Seattle
God supports Oprah.
Toronto, Canada
It's really to bad that the right to free speech, and the right
for the american public to know has to be
taken to court by a bunch of red neck, bubba beer drinking good
buddies. Could it possibly be that
just because the program aired during the Mad Cow craze that
beef sales would have wen"t down anyway? It's just another
sue happy person(s} way to try to milk someone for money.
I don't know about you, but chicken and samonella is looking
a lot better.
Arkansas
It is truly shocking what people will sue for these days. We
are continually bullied by those with power, money and influence
on Capital Hill. I fear for our health and future generations
when the "farm animal industry" -- one of the cruelest,
vilest and filthiest -- pumps brutalized, terrified animals
full of hormones, antibiotics and tranquilizers; forces them
to stand in and breathe in their own waste;
then dumps the waste into our rivers and streams, thus further
degrading and contaminating the environment.
I believe that such illnesses/viruses as e coli, mad cow disease,
chicken flu and others are the tip of the iceberg for declining
human health. It is indeed true, that "as ye sow, so shall
ye reap." As we torture, slaughter and profit to satisfy
our unnatural hunger for animal/bird meat, we sicken our immune
system and bear children who, in turn, will suffer from these
and other diseases we have yet to learn about.
Many Americans, dare I say the majority, support you in your
defense against these men who convince the public to force-feed
itself the bodies of innocent creatures who were raised under
the most inhumane and unsanitary conditions. Is it not possible
to use the word "holocaust" to
refer to what we do to ourselves and sentient beings, i.e. farm
animals, by allowing the "flesh industry" to operate
with callous disregard of 1st amendment rights, health and safety.
My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Falls Church, VA
You and Oprah Winfrey stand accused of telling the truth in
public. You're obviously guilty. ;)
I find it appalling that statements such as those you made on
the show are legally actionable... at least the trial may prove
to be a "bully pulpit". Best wishes to the both
of you
Mississippi
I am confident that you guys will win and that These guys will
be taught a lesson that Not to mess with the Truth.
Sacramento, CA
I live in Texas and am usually proud to call myself a native
of this great state, but this defamation lawsuit is an embarrasment.
I sincerely hope the jury in Amarillo understands the possible
ramifications of a trial pitted against our right as Americans
to freedom of speech. As I watched Oprah today, I could see
how exhausted she looked and I felt compelled to write to let
her know that I'm behind her, and if I can find a website for
the cattlemen, I'd like to tell them that I gave up red meat
over a decade ago and that as more Americans become health conscious,
their industry is bound to suffer. If they want to continue
to raise cattle, they are setting themselves up for further
losses. They cannot to continue to sue people every time their
stocks drop. There's nothing I dislike more than people who
jam up the courts with frivilous lawsuits.
Texas
Wishing you vindication in this trial, and success in getting
the word out about the downfalls of a diet based heavily on
animal products.
Pennsylvania
Go for the gusto!!! These cattlemen have been hiding their
dirty (saddles) secrets for too long. It is about time someone
stood up to them. Maybe when you and Oprah win the case people
will see the light about factory farming and realize what they
are doing to these animals. People have to learn the truth so
they can make an informed decision, hopefully to go vegetarian.
I applaud both of you and wish you the best.
North Dakota
Thinking of you and wishing you the best of luck from Saratoga
Springs, NY...if anyone can articulate the facts and dangers
of a meat-based diet, we know you can!! Hope you are well and
that you and your buddy Oprah show the world what's really going
on.
New York
Good luck with the trial. I hope it ends in a resounding victory
for vegans and animals.
Glosderry, South Africa
Over the last couple of years I have cut my beef consumption
about fifty percent. Since the Texas Cattlemen brought
the suit against Oprah, I've cut out the other fifty percent.
This is not about Mad Cow Disease nor free speech. This is about
stupidity. These guys have done more to advance the cause
of vegetarians than all other groups combined. The Lord
works in mysterious ways.
California
Freedom of speech is a measure of democracy. When individuals
or organizations initiate an attempt to destroy what democracy
stands for, we need to stand up to them.
Ontario, Canada
Please don't let this unfortunate incident (or the unfortunate
location) bias your opinion against Texas. There really are
loving, intelligent people here, and beautiful lakes & hills
down here in Austin!
Texas
I eat meat and like it. However I have read a lot of material
on the meat issue, and in my heart, I believe I would be better
off just eating vegetables, grains and the rest - it's a discipline
problem I face !
Anyway, the cattlemen have OBVIOUSLY got a MASSIVE ULTERIOR
MOTIVE. This is cigarretes all over again. Vested interests
trying their best to sling mud all around so as to obscure the
real issues. Best of luck on the trial, Oprah & Howard
Malaysia
I'd just like to say that I'm not a vegetarian, and probably
never will be, but I certainly am a strong believer in our right
to state our own opinion. I watched the show in question, and
I can't believe this suit hasn't been thrown out of court yet!
I love the Oprah show. Oprah always does shows to help people,
she is NOT a trash talk show personality, like Jerry Springer
or the like. There was a deadly disease going around from
BEEF, and she said it like it was.
GO OPRAH AND HOWARD!
