Sweeteners such as maple syrup and black strap molasses have essentially the same caloric value as sugar, but contain some additional nutrients. As a flavoring agent, there's nothing wrong with them, nor will they negatively effect your reversal program.

I drink "instant toffee" every morning: a teaspoon or so of black strap molasses in a cup of hot water. It contains only 15 calories and is a good source of iron, calcium, potassium, magnesium, copper, and manganese; trace elements that are beneficial in a heart-healthy diet.

Maple syrup should be considered the same as sugar, although it is vegan, since it has not been filtered with animal bone charcoal, as most sugars have.

For many low fat recipes that include black strap molasses or maple sugar, go to the link below and click on Recipes.
