Underweight

QuestionI'm underweight, and I've tried to gain weight by eating more carbohydrates (whole grains), but it didn't work. Everyone is telling me to get more fat in my diet, however I feel uncomfortable doing this because of the risks of heart disease, cancer, etc. All the same, I really need to gain weight. Any help would be appreciated.

AnswerYou can stay with plant-based foods while increasing calories (and even fat). Eat more nuts, soy products, and you may want to consume vegetable oils in moderation. Be careful to avoid vegetable oils with saturated fat. Canola oil contains the least (only about 6 percent is saturated), while olive oil is 17 percent saturated fat. Coconut oil is by far the worst--95 percent saturated fat. And finally, if you are active and feeling well, your weight may be just fine as it is.
