When Your Guests Aren't Vegetarians
Our family stopped
eating meat, poultry, fish, and dairy products several
years ago. We're confirmed vegetarians. Often when we
invite guests for lunch or dinner, I feel slightly
embarrassed not offering them more typical food that they
are used to. On the other hand, I can't bear to cook food
that I feel is so unhealthy. Any suggestions?
Don't apologize for
your commitment to a healthy plant-based diet. I share
your strong opinion about meat and dairy products. You
also wouldn't offer them cigarettes if they were smokers.
My friend Dr. Spock and his wife, Mary Morgan recently
invited me, along with several others, who weren't
vegetarian to their Maine home to work on book book
revisions. When they arrived we drove everyone to the
local farmer's market, giving each guest a wicker basket
and a twenty dollar bill. Each was given the job of
shopping for a variety of vegetables, fruit, and bread.
We cooked this on the deck while the book revisions
progressed throughout the day. Everyone enjoyed it
immensely.
