Mommy & Her Ex- Can't Agree on Diet.

Question I'm a divorced single mom and raise my kid vegan during the week. But on the weekend my husband is feeding my six-year-old daughter hamburgers and fishsticks. She comes home with an upset stomach every Sunday evening.

She's also started putting on some weight Is there anything I can do about this?

Answer In my book, Dr. Attwood's Low-Fat Prescription For Kids, Chapter 21 (which was written by Victoria Moran), gives good advice on this issue. She suggests first trying to get your ex-spouse on your side, by convincing him of the health risk of high-fat, animal-based foods. He needs to understand why a plant-based diet is best for your daughters future health. Give him a copy of the book. He'll be converted by the time he finishes the introduction.

"In the meanwhile, make whatever subtle but important changes you can," Victoria says, "and keep the overall picture in mind. Your children are what they eat, but they're a lot more than that as well. Their health also depends on exercise, adequate rest and sleep, fresh air, and more subtle elements such as feeling loved and worthy." Concerning parents living together with this discord, she adds, " I am convinced that having a stable family life without parental discord over a daily issue like 'what's for dinner?' is more significant than whether a child's diet contains 15 percent of calories from fat or 25 during the transitional stages."
